The rehabilitation program for cases of ICP is an individually compiled scheme of medical, psychological, psychotherapeutic and social –educational activities aimed for eliminating the pathological symptoms of the disease, compensating the neurological deficit and preventing its progression. One of the facilities that help rehabilitating persons disabled due to ICP is the Interdisciplinary rehabilitation center in Moscow.

The Center has its own in-patient and out-patient departments headed by experienced specialists, the training sessions are performed using innovative equipment and efficacious methods combining physical and psychological rehabilitation in cases of ICP, due to which the disabled patients develop positive changes in their status.

The basis of medical rehabilitation in ICP patients includes the following principles:

  • Comprehensiveness — the physicians treat the disease as a whole and pay attention not only to neurological issues, but the general well-being;
  • activity — maximum number of tasks that the patient has to do unassisted but controlled by the physician or an educationist;
  • purposefulness — each patient clearly knows the target he is following, the patient makes decisions and discusses all the aspects and questions;
  • productivity — the Center adopts only the successfully tested treatment methods.

The medical activities are aimed to stimulating the mental growth, decreasing the muscle tonus and socialization of the patient. Due to such an approach, the patient rapidly regains physical health, returns to physical and social well-being.

Specialists recommend initiating the rehabilitation activities at the age of up to 1 year, so that in their future life, due to the possibilities of social rehabilitation, the grown-up ICP patients could have a successful and complete life — getting jobs, new friends and partners, being interested in what is going on in the society.

The rehabilitation includes two stages — in-patient and out-patient. The duration of each stage is determined on an individual bases, depending on the severity of pathological symptoms and treatment objectives.

Traditionally the following methods of rehabilitation are being used:

  1. Motor or sports-oriented. ICP treatment with the use of sports-oriented rehabilitation is aimed for the improvement of motor skills. The training sessions are carried out in groups and individually using balls, dumbbells, mats or exercise machines. The set of recommended exercises depends on clinical manifestations of the illness. The main goal is preventing the development of muscular atrophy and contractures, restoring the muscle tone and strength.
  2. Psychological and psychotherapeutic. Psychologists and psychotherapists help achieving psychological balance, regaining the will to live with opening new abilities. Their help lets patients accept themselves as full-fledged members of the society.
  3. Massage is required to relieve muscular hypertonus, to regain the range of motions in the joints, to stimulate the activity of he central nervous system. Massage is applied together with motor rehabilitation.
  4. Logopedic. The aim of the training sessions with the logopaedist is to correct the speech disorders. The educationalist teaches the patient on articulation techniques, due to which the speech becomes clear and understandable.
  5. Physiotherapeutic. Among all the physiotherapeutic procedures we use electrophoresis with various medications, magnetotherapy, ultrasound exposure, balneology procedures. While leech therapy is not used as the rehabilitation method for ICP, it can be recommended for the prevention of thrombosis, for relieving inflammation and increasing the immune response.
  6. Medication therapy. Medicinal products are used to relieve muscle tone, to eliminate the spastic symptom, to stimulate the cerebral circulation or to increase the conductivity of nerve impulses within the brain tissues.

The set of alternative methods include balneotherapy, aqua-rehabilitation, hippo-therapy, dolphin therapy, vojta therapy and bobath therapy, proprioceptive correction, mud therapy, kinesiotherapy, methods developed by Montessori and Kozyavkin. They are used to develop correct operating habits for the locomotor system, upper and lower limbs.

Therapy sessions in cases of infantile cerebral palsy is performed by orthopaedists, neurologists, physiotherapists and psychologists that underwent specialized training on the application for rehabilitation methods. By evaluating the clinical signs in a patient, they provide objective information about the disease, about the specific features of its course and methods of preventing the progression, they select an optimal program of combined rehabilitation for cases of ICP in Moscow. The cost of therapy program and the duration of rehabilitation procedures, which are carried out on a systematic and continuous basis, depends on the qualification of specialists, their professional category and the instrumentation of the selected medical institution.
